AI & School: honest guides for students, parents and teachers

Plain, sourced guides to AI in schoolwork: which free AI helpers exist, how Google's homework tools work, what photo-solver apps cost, whether AI detectors are reliable, and what large US districts actually allow.

AI is part of homework now, whether a school has a policy or not. This section helps the three people at the kitchen table: the student trying to get unstuck, the parent wondering what is allowed, and the teacher deciding what to do about it. Pages rest on documented sources such as official terms, pricing pages and published studies, not hands-on benchmarks, and each one says so where it matters.

New: what AI-run private schools promise and what the evidence shows, in AI schools and Alpha School: claims vs evidence.

Choosing a tool

Start with the job you need done. For general explanations, the free AI homework helpers comparison covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others side by side. If your family lives in Google’s apps, the Google homework help guide explains Lens, Circle to Search and Gemini. For photo-solver apps, Gauth vs Brainly vs Photomath compares features, prices and privacy. Our tool roundups then go deeper by category: AI homework helpers, AI math solvers, AI tutors, AI study tools and AI citation generators. Math gets its own guide, AI math help, because it is where AI is used most and trusted too easily.

Evidence and policy

Two research pages anchor the debate. Do AI detectors flag honest students? tables what six studies and vendor reports found, including the high false-positive rate for non-native English writers. The AI policies tracker for 32 large US districts shows what districts permit, restrict or have not yet decided. Read both before writing a rule or responding to a flag.

Guides by role

Teachers can move from detecting AI work honestly to AI-proof assignments, rubrics for the AI era and a classroom AI policy template. Parents should read safe AI tools by age and how to spot AI homework. Students get a practical AI study workflow and how to use AI for homework without cheating. Key terms such as hallucination are defined in the glossary.

Frequently asked questions

Is using AI for homework cheating?
Using AI for homework is cheating when it replaces the work a student was meant to do, or when the help is hidden. Using AI to understand a concept, check reasoning or generate practice questions is usually allowed. Schools punish deception rather than tools, and the class or district AI policy is the rule that actually applies, so students should check it and disclose any AI help.
What is the best free AI for homework help?
The strongest free tutor-style options are ChatGPT’s study mode, launched July 29, 2025 and available on the Free plan, and Gemini’s Guided Learning, launched August 6, 2025. Both are designed to ask questions and walk through steps instead of handing over answers. Khanmigo is free only for teachers; learners and parents pay $4 a month or $44 a year.
How old do you have to be to use ChatGPT for school?
ChatGPT requires users to be at least 13, and users under 18 need a parent’s or guardian’s consent. Perplexity follows the same 13-plus rule, Microsoft Copilot is 13 and older in most countries, and Claude’s consumer plans require users to be 18. Terms change, so parents should check each tool’s current age policy before a child signs up.
Can AI detectors tell if a student used ChatGPT?
AI detectors give probability estimates, not proof. In a Stanford-led study, seven detectors labeled human-written essays by non-native English writers as AI 61.22% of the time on average. OpenAI withdrew its own classifier in July 2023 after it caught only 26% of AI text. A detector score is a reason to talk with a student, not evidence of misconduct.
Do schools allow students to use AI?
Policies vary widely by district. In The Homework Site’s tracker of 32 of the largest US school districts, 14 had a published AI policy or guidance in force as of October 14, 2026. Most of those allow student use only with conditions, such as teacher permission, approved tools or parental consent, and 7 of the 14 require students to disclose AI use.
