Glossary

Plain definitions of the AI terms that show up in school — large language model, hallucination, AI detector, academic integrity — without the jargon.

School AI conversations are full of words that get used confidently and understood vaguely. A parent hears “hallucination” in a school newsletter and pictures something far stranger than what it means. A student hears “academic integrity” and hears “rules,” not “the reason the qualification is worth anything.”

Each entry here does the same three things: says what the term means in one paragraph, explains the mechanics underneath it, and tells you why it matters for actual homework. No entry assumes you’ve read any other entry.

Start with hallucination — the single most consequential concept for anyone using AI for schoolwork, and the reason you never submit a citation you haven’t checked. AI detector explains what those scores are and aren’t; the longer evidence review is worth your time if a score is currently pointed at you. Academic integrity covers the standard everything else is measured against.

If a term you’ve met isn’t here, tell us and we’ll add it.
