Homework: History, Research and Help

Everything about homework in one place: where it came from, whether it should be banned, how much is normal, the latest statistics, and free tools and help for getting it done.

A teenager's hands working at a kitchen table in the evening with an open blank notebook

This section answers the questions parents, students and teachers ask about homework: how much is normal, whether it helps, where it came from, and what to do when a student is stuck at 9 p.m. Every guide lists its sources, so you can check the numbers yourself.

The short version of the research: most US students do about an hour or less a night, the benefits are clearest in grades 7 to 12, and past about two hours a night in high school more homework stops helping.

History and the big debate

Start with the past, because it explains the present argument. Who invented homework traces practice at home from Prussian schools to the 1901 California ban and shows why the Roberto Nevilis story falls apart. Should homework be banned? lays out the pros and cons with the evidence behind each, what parents tell pollsters, and schools that dropped homework entirely. If you want something lighter, homework fun facts covers what homework spelled backwards is, plus 25 sourced facts.

The research behind the numbers

Homework statistics 2026 collects time spent, stress, the digital divide and AI use, with a ready-made citation. For original data, our research desk publishes district homework policies from 32 of the largest US districts and homework hours by country from PISA. Together they show the gap between what guidelines suggest and what rule books actually say. More datasets sit on the research hub.

From “how much” to “how to”

Once you know what is normal, the practical pages take over. The homework time calculator compares the 10-minute rule with a real week. The homework planner schedules each assignment backward from its due date and exports to a calendar. When a problem will not budge, math homework help gives a step routine, and homework scanner apps explains what photo-solvers cost and how to use them to learn rather than copy. For AI questions, the AI and school hub goes further.

Frequently asked questions

How much homework should a 5th grader have?
Under the 10-minute rule, a 5th grader would get about 50 minutes of homework a night: 10 minutes for each grade level. The National Education Association notes that many districts follow the guideline, but in The Homework Site’s review of district documents, none of the 11 checked for it actually mentioned the rule. Treat 50 minutes as a rough benchmark and compare it with your child’s real evenings in the homework time calculator.
Is homework actually helpful?
Homework helps older students more than younger ones. A 2006 synthesis of more than 60 studies by Cooper, Robinson and Patall found a generally positive link between homework and achievement, stronger in grades 7 to 12 than in kindergarten to grade 6. Beyond about two hours a night in upper high school, more homework was not linked to higher achievement. For elementary students the evidence shows neither clear gains nor clear harm.
How much time do US students spend on homework?
US teens aged 15 to 17 spend about an hour a day on homework during the school year, up from 30 minutes in the mid-1990s, according to Pew Research Center’s 2019 analysis of federal time-use data. Internationally, US 15-year-olds reported 6.09 hours of homework a week in PISA 2012, above the OECD average of 4.88 hours.
How much homework is too much?
For high school students, research and district rules both point to about two hours a night as the upper limit. The Cooper synthesis found no added achievement beyond that point, and the few large districts that set written limits, such as Miami-Dade and Fairfax County, stop at about 2 hours. At 10 high-performing California high schools, students averaged 3.1 hours a night and 56% named homework a primary stressor.
Who invented homework?
Nobody invented homework. Practice at home grew gradually alongside compulsory schooling, and no historian credits a single inventor. The popular story about Roberto Nevilis is a myth that appears only on unsourced web pages, which cannot even agree on the year. What is documented: around 1900, US homework mostly meant memorizing facts, and in 1901 California banned homework for children under 15.
Where can students get free homework help?
The best free live tutoring is often available through a public library card: many libraries offer Tutor.com or Brainfuse HelpNow to cardholders. Free sites that teach include Khan Academy, CK-12, OpenStax and Purdue OWL for writing. Statewide programs such as Homework Louisiana and Homework CA, and hotlines such as AskRose for grades 6 to 12 math and science, are also free.
