The short answer

In Massachusetts, the calculator treats your area as heavy-snow (Boston (Logan) averages 49.2 inches a year), so closure odds reach about 50% at 10 inches of overnight snow — less with ice, extreme cold or snow falling between midnight and 6 a.m. It is an estimate, not an announcement from your district.

The calculator above is preset for Massachusetts. Boston (Logan) averages 49.2 inches of snow a year (1991–2020 normals), which puts Massachusetts in our heavy-snow group. For a public school in an average suburban district, the model needs about 10 inches of overnight snow before the chance of a closure reaches 50%. Enter your ZIP code to load the National Weather Service forecast, or change the snow tolerance if your town gets much more or less snow than Boston (Logan).

How much snow closes school in Massachusetts? (model estimate)

Computed with the calculator’s formula for a heavy-snow area: public school, average district, no ice, no extreme cold, no timing boost.

Overnight snowChance closedChance of a delay
3 in2%17%
4 in5%32%
6 in16%50%
8 in33%48%
10 in50%39%
12 in64%28%
18 in87%11%

Ice changes the picture quickly: in the model, 0.1 inch of freezing rain alone gives about 23% closure odds here, and 0.25 inch about 82%. A morning wind chill of -30°F gives 50% from cold alone. Heavy snow between midnight and 6 a.m. counts 25% more, because it is still falling when districts decide around 4–6 a.m.

Reported thresholds and cold-day policies in Massachusetts

These come from our snow day thresholds dataset. Most are news reports, so they describe policy as reported at the time, not necessarily today.

  • Boston Public Schools — Snow: Closed Jan 7 2022 for forecast of several inches with ~1 in/hr rates 5-8 a.m. (news; source; Timing during commute + bus driver shortage cited by Mayor Wu)
  • Massachusetts (statewide study 2003-2010) — Snow: Each day with 10+ inches -> 0.51 additional closings; each 4-10 inch day -> only 0.04 closings (but 0.08 absences). (academic; source; Goodman, Education Next Summer 2015; NBER WP 20221)

Remote learning days in Massachusetts

We have not verified Massachusetts’s rule on remote learning days for weather, so the calculator does not estimate a remote-day chance here. Your district calendar or handbook will say whether it uses remote or e-learning days.

Minimum school year in Massachusetts

The Education Commission of the States’ 2023 comparison lists these minimums for Massachusetts (they may not reflect later legislation):

  • Days: 180
  • Instructional hours: K: 425 h; 1-5: 900 h; 6-12: 990 h

Days lost to closures count against that minimum, which is why districts that use up their snow days typically add make-up days at the end of the year — and why remote-day rules matter.

Where to check official closures

Frequently asked questions

How much snow does it take to close school in Massachusetts?
There is no statewide number; each district decides. In our model, Massachusetts counts as a heavy-snow state (Boston (Logan) averages 49.2 inches a year), so closure odds reach about 50% at 10 inches of overnight snow for an average public school district. Ice, extreme cold and snow falling between midnight and 6 a.m. raise the odds.
Can Massachusetts schools use remote learning instead of a snow day?
We have not verified Massachusetts’s rule, so check your district calendar.
How many school days are required in Massachusetts?
The Education Commission of the States’ 2023 comparison lists the minimum school year in Massachusetts as: days — 180; instructional hours — K: 425 h; 1-5: 900 h; 6-12: 990 h. Closures that are not made up can push a district below that minimum.
